How it is calculated
The value is converted to metres per second. km/h ÷ 3.6 = m/s and m/s × 3.6 = km/h. 1 mph = 1.609 km/h and 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.852 km/h.
Example: 90 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 25 m/s; 2 s of distraction covers 50 m.
Keep in mind
- References: a person walks at about 4-5 km/h (1.1-1.4 m/s); a horse at a walk, about 6-7 km/h; a Beaufort force 6 wind blows at 39-49 km/h.
