How it is calculated

A full turn is 360° = 2π rad = 400 gon = 24 h of hour angle. So 1 rad = 180/π ≈ 57.2958°, 1° = 60′ = 3600″ and 1 h of angle = 15°.

To turn degrees, minutes and seconds into decimal degrees: 40° 25′ 12″ = 40 + 25/60 + 12/3600 = 40.42°.

Keep in mind

  • The Earth turns 15° every hour: that is why the right ascension of stars is measured in hours, and a 1 h difference in solar noon means 15° of longitude.
  • Slopes in % are not an angle unit: use the slope tool.
